The lopper's cutting blade slides past a counterblade in a scissor motion, resulting in the name "bypass". The interesting design of this California style lopper creates a slicing motion during cutting, which helps prune live wood and spreads wear over larger areas of the blade for long life. The Bypass Lopper's counterblade is hook shaped and permits a large cutting diameter that holds the branch steady during cutting. The sap groove is a recess that reduces the contact area between the counterblade and the blade, which causes less friction and sticking.
