I should preface by saying that I’m not using the Big Dipper lighting in a professional context. My interest is purely for my own entertainment and to satisfy my curiosity in tech related products. The Big Dipper moving head light is easy to setup and get working independently of any control board, but on that note it has capabilities that I doubt I’ll be tapping into. Running standalone, it makes a great party light which is responsive to sound or can be set to run in auto mode independently. The lighting is bright and colourful. Movement of the head has occasional been problematic and sounds like there is a gear grinding. Perhaps my unit sustained shipping damage. Overall I recommend this light!

I'm mostly a bedroom DJ but play out occasionally, with a very cobbled-together mobile setup. The experience made me curious about getting some proper mobile gear, and I was curious about this moving head light.I am a complete novice when it comes to lighting so I'm starting from scratch, and figured this might be a good start. Sadly, that was a mistake. This product comes with a mounting bracket and screws, and a ~36" power cord, which seems pretty short to me, but perhaps that's normal. It also comes with an instruction booklet that's about 3 pages long and is mostly a chart of codes and functions. Again, as someone with no prior knowledge or experience with lighting, this wasn't helpful to me in the slightest. I learned more about the product from the images in the listing page than the instructions, and ultimately followed the advice from another reviewer and found a Youtube video where a Filipino reviewer did an unboxing and walkthrough. Even those poorly-translated captions were far more helpful than the sparse info in the instructions. From there, I finally understood how to get it to work... at least some very basic functions. It appears that you need a DMX controller to really get the full use out of this light, but sadly my DJ software can't access the lighting controls without an additional licence (or substantially upgrading my controller). Thus, I'm limited to the unit's pre-programmed patterns for now. It's a very bright unit -- definitely blinded me a couple times when it shone in my eyes while spinning randomly -- and I could see it working well for a small party. However, there are some cons: there's no power switch, so it turns on the moment it's plugged in. Not a big deal if it's on a setting where the lights are off, but there's an internal fan that runs constantly, and it's a bit loud. It'd probably get drowned out with loud music, but might not be great for silent/quiet parts. There's a mode where it moves based on sound detection, but I found this didn't work that well: it must only work for very loud sounds. I could trigger sound-based movement by clapping my hands near the light, but it did nothing when I tried playing music at full volume from my phone, even moving it all around to see if there was a sweet spot.I don't have the experience to speak on how it compares with higher quality moving head lights, but from what I can gather, this is a budget option. Just from trying the basic functions, it's certainly not beginner-friendly, and I wouldn't recommend it for anyone expecting a simple "plug and play" type experience. However, it could be a cheap starting point to learn your way around DMX controls.

I have been involved in amateur rock band lighting for a long time and wanted to take my light show to a new level by incorporating moving head lights into the mix. When this light came up for review I decided to give one a try. It arrived quickly, well packaged and undamaged. It's slightly bigger than I expected ( a good thing ) as most of these style of lights are very small and typically about 6" tall. The build quality is solid and the large base keeps the light stable when not using the included bracket for hanging. An authenticity sticker on the box verifies that the light is not a counterfit. DMX set up was easy (14 channel) and the light responded quickly and smoothly. The light is decently bright, colors are vivid and even across the seven 8 watt LEDs. I hooked it up to a small lighting setup at a garage jam session a few days after I received it and it was an awesome addition to the show. This moving head light elevated the atmosphere to the next level, especially once the haze machine kicked in. Fan noise (2 of them, for effective cooling of the base and moving head) is noticeable only in quiet environments.Overall I'm very impressed with this light: solid build quality, nice size, bright vivid moving light and easy to use. I might have to get one, maybe two possibly 3 or 4 more!

First off when you get the box it may be rattling, so did mine it was nothing to worry about it was just a screw for the mounting bracket hitting the mounting bracket. There is no power switch so as soon as you plug it in the fan turns on, with a DMX controller you may be able to turn it off off. Otherwise you need to unplug it and the light head will drop when no power. The manual just lists what the faceplate settings are and what various DMX settings are, but not how to do anything with it really. I had to watch a Tagalog video with subtitles to get an idea how to do anything with it.Without a DMX controller you can do a fast auto program and a slow auto program which just cycles between colors and a strobe and movements at different speeds. There is a sound sensitive setting, but the music needs to be quite load to trigger.I think with a DMX cable or more you can sync multiple units even without a DMX controller. All the other features you need a DMX controller which I don't have.

The light is very bright. The fan that blow is a bit loud when in use.Without a DMX controller, the modes you're stuck with are the Auto (fast/slow), sound activated.I can't set it to be one specific color, pointing to specific area.If you're thinking getting one of these, to solve the lightning use by itself, I'll check to see if you can get a cheap DMX controller first.
