This is a pretty good set to get into fly tying. My bother has been tying his own flys for years. He helped me get started and complimented the set but said that the tools were great for someone just getting into the hobby but some of them would need to be upgraded as I developed my own “style” and got past the basics. So far I’ve been more than pleased with these tools but I am only casually into the art.Based on other sets I’d say this set is more expensive but the quality of the tools mostly justifies the price. And the case, which holds all the tools securely and looks great and neat more than justifies the price in my book.

I've been tying flies for a while now but this last year have gone much deeper and have been learning new techniques and been tying different types of flies including streamers, deer hair spinning, etc. so I have been buying and using lots of tools and I can tell you that this set has pretty much everything you need and is very nice quality.First off this comes in a nice case that is actually a streamer fly box but has a foam insert that is molded to hold all of the tools. I have used each of the tools and they are all very nice quality. It has 2 pairs of scissors, one large and one small and they are nice and sharp and cut well. The whip finish tool spins well and feels nice although it has a sharp chisel/screwdriver end and for the life of me I can't figure out what that is for, but I assume there is some purpose. The bodkin, threader, dubbing spinner, dubbing brush and hair stacker all work well and are nice quality. The only tools I probably won't use much are the bobbin holder, which is okay but not the best, and the hackle plyers because they rub together a bit and I have another one I like better.Overall this is a great set that has everything you need and all the tools are very good quality and work well and will do a great job for you regardless of your tying skill level.

Take this from someone who has literally NEVER gone fly fishing. Yes, I'm going to get my first mountain trout on a fly I tied myself, even if it kills me (quite possible). I've always been fascinated in knots and the sheer art of fly fishing is on a level of its own. I've watched with simmering jealousy while folks in waders cast out their art and reel in a meal. Nevermore. I'm taking it slowly, but things are starting to come together. The case itself is beautifully packaged, with everything fitting everything else like a hand in a glove. The handles are ergonomic and comfortable as well. See you out on the water, I'll be the fella tied up in the tippet...

The quality of the tools is quite acceptable, although I will have to agree with one reviewer who said that the sharp chisel point at the end of the whip tyer is annoying and I'll be filing that down to smooth it. I have to assume that in time, the hackle pliers will loosen up to make it easier to open them. They're pretty stiff. The larger scissors are a bit tight at the end but these and the head scissors are both very sharp.I have seen positive comments on the case but I have a couple of comments. I have found that if the kit is opened flat out like a book, the hinge jumps out when trying to close the box. My experience has been that if I open it only 90 degrees or a little further, it's fine. for the most part I like the foam cutouts for the tools but I would love it if they were cut just a bit looser around the tools. The dubbin brush is difficult to seat back into its slot and I've not been successful in seated the bobbin threader at all. The difficulties in this paragraph are the reasons for the one star reduction.Still, I would take this and a travel vise on the road with no problem. I could do just about anything streamside with this that I would need to (assuming I am not fighting the case).Definitely worth the pretty reasonable price, especially when compared to the components if bought separately. Good job Kingfisher!

For the price, this is a no-brainer. Just buy it. The scissors and bobbin (most important pieces) are fantastic. These scissors hold hair very nicely and don't just push it away while cutting. These cut just as good as my Dr. Slick scissors. The box converts into a large streamer case.JUST BUY IT.
