I have an embarrassingly large collection of mouthpieces now, including many other Wicks. The 4AL was my usual choice for second trombone (symphonic) but made the upper register difficult. I thought the 4.5AL would help that a bit. Not so. I find the 4.5AL bigger and more powerful than the 4AL and, if anything, less secure in the upper register.Steve Ferguson (The Horn Guys) puts it this way: "This is the perfected Bach 4G, but more efficient. We find this to feel larger than a 4AL, and seems to have a slower response. The 4AL is more popular - try it first.."So my take would be that, if you are familiar with and happy with the 4AL, this might be a good addition to your collection and one that you would use occasionally when you wanted a different but quite similar response.
