Time to change the First Alert smoke detectors. I really appreciate that they do not change the electrical connection which makes changing the unit that much easier.

I just installed six of these to replace my old (due for replacement) Kidde dual sensor smoke detectors.1. The mounting plate is very strange - it seems that there are no proper holes for a standard Canadian octagonal box - none of the holes seem to line up with the screws. It is possible to attach the mounting plate, but it seems that the screws are just barely grabbing it by the edge. Additionally, when I screwed on the smoke detector onto the mounting plate, the mounting plate rotated the wrong way relative to the screws that are holding it. Very strange/poor design.2. The electrical connector that snaps into the smoke detector requires a screwdriver to disconnect. The Kidde detectors had levers that could be pressed by fingers, and were easier to disconnect.3. The model 3120BA is not featured on the company's web site. The model 3120B is marked as a retired model. So there is no download link for an electronic copy of the manual, nor other product information beyond what you see on the Amazon product page.4. I like that the hush and test functions are operated by one single button (opposed to 2 buttons on Kidde). When I'm trying to hush the smoke alarm, I don't want to have to read tiny letters next to the buttons. I just want to hush it.Compared to the Kidde, the First Alert smoke detector is smaller in diameter, but thicker/taller. I think that it looks a little bit uglier than the Kidde, but this is subjective.

Bought 2 to replace old ones and they both fit perfectly. Very easy to install and work great.

Superb product. Detects all types of fires with the best technology. Needs an electrician to install as it is 110 V, but that's not a big issue.

Quite a few small things to gripe about.1) the green status LED is very very feeble. It is small, inset, and not bright. To see it for status, you need to NOT HAVE the bright lights on, AND be standing almost directly below the LED (remember it is inset).2) the low battery alert triggers on first powering up the system. It will keep going and flashing red until you figure out how to reset. And sometimes as mine did the battery ships loose in compartment thus keeps re-triggering the low batt alert.3) supposedly easy to remove battery when fire alarm is still in ceiling.. NOPE.. The push out tabs are so hard to push down when your fingers are hooked from below to the top of the battery slide. At least the alarm comes with 10Y life and 2 kinds of triggers: ionic and electrochemical alarms mean less false alarms.
