Used to connect VGA output from my laptop ( which has a DVD player that will play Region 2 DVDs) to my TV (which only had HDMI connections). The sound out RCA jack (for headphones) is on the side opposite to the VGA plug on my laptop, and the length provided barely stretches across - I would suggest measuring your distance from VGA plug to headphone plug if yours is also on opposite sides, to make sure that you do not need an extender! I also had to purchase an additional male to make HDMI extender to connect this device to my TV.

Was able to connect an old laptop via the DB15 connector and send the signal to HDMI input on the TV, without any hassle. Very easy to setup, you need a spare USB jack to supply power to the unit. A USB power cable and 3.5mm to 3.5mm stereo cable were supplied.

This is THE best product find (on 3 tested) to compensate for a lack of computer HDMI output TO THE HDMI INPUT of a screen (or projector...), * ONE WAY (non the inverse)...MENTIONI tried 2 lower-end (cheaper) products just before and there is a real improvement in image (and sound) quality with this one. * It's really not worth wasting time testing MORE low-end products, often without sound (to be adapted separately) or amplification of image quality (via USB).IMAGE QUALITY (with amplification)Good, but less than with an HDMI socket on both sides. Enough to make a visual presentation (on a big screen, or projection, with sound and image) of your computer, to watch and listen multimedia contents (everything who can be displayed on your own computer screen).> This is not an HD display product (especially on a large screen) but the quality is reasonable for screen work.SOUND QUALITYGood, but a little less strong than with a pure HDMI transmission from one end to the other. The PLUS (+)+ EASY to connect, inclued for a beginner.+ Audio WIRE (3.5mm) is LONG enough to reach most computer audio jack locations.+ The MAIN CABLE is solid and long enough to reach the destination ** In most part of the cases.+ Has a USB connect cable who AMPLIFIES the quality* of the image, but it is already displayed without it.* Improvement is more visible on a large screen.Small MINUS (-)- The image is worse than with HDMI on both sides.* But the quality of 2 HDMI sockets is possibly not possible to match in this way (adapted, composite).- Sound transmission is good, but a little weaker.- USB connector a bit rough and long, but usable*.* A little tight. To be careful when disconnecting (to be taken by the socket, not the cable so as not to broke the connector). This review is based on a sporadic, but solid use. I can't answer for someone who uses it on a regular or weekly basis.QUALITY-PRICE ratio; Good! It is one to know in the better quality adaptation possibilities, for the price (around $17.99 CAD, early 2023). Prices will surely drop again as there are more and more computers equipped with HDMI sockets, but for those who keep their good machine or for other reasons, there it is.Hope this unbiased review has been helpful to you, through others.

Ordered this Apr. 1st. and received it Apr. 5th. It works beautifully, easy to install, was working in minutes using a Lenovo laptop and connecting to a Sony Bravia. Picture is outstanding, I couldn't be happier. Highly recommended.Edit: The company reached out to me to see if I was satisfied. I told them I was, but after a few days of use the device started to fail. I contacted the company, explained the problem and they immediately got back to me and sent a replacement, which I received within days and it is now installed and working. Excellent customer service. You can not go wrong with these guys.

There is someone else who wrote a review on this directed at Linux users, and that is actually the reason I bought this thing. I am running on Linux Mint. I love every version from v18.0 forward. They're all really great! Other than being very tricky to get Windows Games running on it, sometimes Linux will have difficulty with some types of hardware. Graphics hardware can be particularly problematic in some instances. So it is always good to know in advance that a piece of graphics hardware is going to work on Linux, before buying it and finding out the hard way that it doesn't.At first, I had bought a VGA 2 HDMI converter with audio support, but it was terrible! While the video aspect worked fine, not only did the audio aspect not work at all, but it sent high pitched annoying sounds through the speakers. So I decided to try one without audio, which didn't work, period! No video, no nothing! You may as well give it to your cats to play with. So after those two fails, my search resumed and I came across this one. Seeing as a Linux user had reported zero problems and everything working perfectly, I rolled the dice and won with this! The other person did mention one minor caveat that I will reiterate and add onto. The user "A.H." mentioned "1024x768 was the only resolution available" despite the fact that the computer they had plugged into it "was older but supported 1080P". This has been true for me for both the first adapter that I mentioned earlier in this review, as well as this one that I am writing about now. There is however one work-around that though it will not raise the resolution, it will restore the display from square-looking to wide screen. If you have a monitor or TV that has a function called "PIX" or "PIX SHAPE", this does the equivalent for the output display as "scale" does for desktop wallpaper. In short: it allows the display to fill your entire screen, regardless of what the size or dimensions or quality level of the original source actually is.In closing: I highly recommend this product to any Linux user who is retro-fitting an older PC to function with more modern capabilities.

I love this product because it wasn't expensive, it absolutely fits my needs, as well as it was delivered to me fast. However, I only wish that I could have found out about it sooner than I did. What happened is that I ordered the wrong product the first time around and after consulting with Star Tech customer support, I found that after having to struggle to get the first product to work, I was advised by them to buy something else altogether. I started with ordering the slim USB 3.0 to HDMI external video card multi monitor adapter, (USB32HDES), which worked for me in that it allowed me to mirror my desktop monitor onto my smart TV screen. Yes, it did mirror my screen properly for everything except for doing playback of my boxed set DVD movies. The problem was that after I struggled for a bit, I was finally able to play them. However, most of the time, I would get a situation where had my desktop monitor come through fine but get a black screen while attempting to playback on the smart TV screen which I was projecting to. The frustrating thing about it happens to be that it would do this intermittently so I always thought that I was not playing my movies back correctly. Finally, a month after I had ordered the product, I decided to call Star Tech customer service only to find out that my product is working alright except that the copyright protection was kicking in on my smart TV screen which was making it black out in the first place, even if only intermittently. The tech guy then recommended another product which connected directly to my VGA outlet rather than through my USB port. This way, the VGA signal would be sent through the HDMI converter as one screen, rather than 2 so that the copyright protection wouldn't be triggered and thus allow me to watch my DVDs on my smart TV screen rather than only my monitor. However, my only problem is that I now have this multi monitor Star Tech gadget which I'm now stuck with seeing that I paid all of $67.95 for which I've now had for over a month which I can't return to Amazon for full refund. This Gana VGA to HDMI adapter with sound works real great. The only inconvenience that I had with it now is that I had to constantly pull my HP small form factor computer out of it's under the desk rack each time to unplug my desktop monitor and connect the converter to it instead to get the signal going out to my smart TV. I did find a perfect solution to this problem in that I then bought and installed an axGear 2 port VGA switching box which after I had installed it, allowed me to effortlessly switch between my desktop monitor screen and my smart TV.UPDATE: I called Amazon customer service and told them about the wrong item sent to me for my needs the first time around and I found that in lieu of the fact that I had first consulted with Startech customer support and received the wrong advice, the Amazon agent granted me a full refund and sent me an RMA shipping label which I printed off and sent the Startech device back for a $76.10 refund on my MasterCard. Thank you Amazon!

For my test bench I have a little KVM switch to hook up multiple computers to 1 monitor + mouse/keyboard. When the old monitor died, the one I replaced it with did not have a VGA port. 99% of the VGA to HDMI cables/adapters here on Amz work in the wrong direction for my needs. Those are designed to hook up a newer device (like a laptop) to an older monitor (with VGA). And all of them are one-direction, don't work in "reverse".This little device is designed to work this way. The input is the VGA port (which I hooked up to my KVM with a VGA-VGA cable we all have laying around in our closets) from the KVM, to an HDMI cable which goes to HDMI input on my monitor. Worked instantly, and very clear 1080p.Now I could nitpick a little... it requires micro-usb 5v power and comes with a short cord, this got plugged into my router which was next to it and had an extra USB jack. It comes with a short 3.5mm stereo male to male plug, so it can "inject" 3.5mm audio into the HDMI signal if I so chose. I did not try this, as I have a speaker hooked up to the KVM and don't want to use monitor speakers, but it is an option. Then you need a VGA M to M cable, and an HDMI M to M cable (not included). It would have been nice if they could have included some short ones, so that I didn't have to coil up 2 6ft long cables behind my monitor. But this is not a deal breaker, most of us have these cables laying around anyway. The adapter itself is pretty small, maybe 2" by 2". I'm thinking about using velcro to attach to the back of the monitor, again would have been nice to been included. You might have to spend a couple more bucks on a VGA cable or an HDMI cable. And you need to factor in the MicroUSB power it needs, an old cell phone charger would probably work fine. I wish it did higher resolutions like 1440p, but it tops out at 1080p and that is good enough (I assume this might be a VGA port limitation)?Conclusions.... it's $11 and it works. It allowed me to use an older device with a newer monitor. Didn't have to buy a new KVM ($100+) that uses HDMI.
