All Purpose Woodworking Tool

You can use it for smoothing smaller pieces of wood and chamfering corners.

Japanese planes require blade adjustment before use. Please refer below.

How to push out the blade

Japanese hand plane

What you need

Use a hammer or a wood mallet to adjust the blade of the plane. Using a hammer of around 6 oz is ideal for fine tuning.

Japanese hand plane

1. Hit the head of the plane blade

The cutting edge comes out by hitting the head of the blade with a hammer.

Japanese hand plane

2. Check the blade edge

Turn the plane upside down, level the line of sight and check at the blade edge. It looks better when viewed on a white background.

Japanese hand plane

3. A strand of hair's width is ideal

Push out the blade so that a line of a single hair (about 0.002 inch) can be seen from the lower end. It is ideal for general use.

Adjust to 0.001 inch when finishing the surface.

How to retract or remove the blade

Japanese hand plane

When the blade is pushed out too much

When the blade comes out too much, hit the corner of the body and the blade will return.

Japanese hand plane

When the blade comes out diagonally

If the blade comes out too far to the left, hit the left side of the blade to adjust (return) until it is horizontal. In the case of the right, adjust by tapping the right side of the blade.

Japanese hand plane

When removing the blade

Hitting the corner of the plane while pushing down the blade with your finger. You can remove the blade. * If you can't get out by tapping lightly, try hitting harder. The blade must be removable.

Japanese hand plane

CAUTION!

When adjusting the blade, be sure to hit the CORNER of the body. If you hit the center instead of the corner, the plane may crack.

Chip breaker (Ura-gane, Osae-gane) adjustment & Tips

Japanese hand plane

Why you need a chip breaker

If you shave wood against the grain, it will not cut well. By adjusting a chip breaker, a beautiful finish is possible regardless of the grain.

KAKURI Japanese Plane is double-blade style and has a chip breaker.

If the shavings are being straightened and came out towards the blade, then the adjustment is OK.

Japanese Plane

1. Hit chip breaker to adjust the position

Tap only the chip breaker and adjust it to near the tip of the main blade.

Japanese Plane

2. Adjust the edge of the chip breaker closer

Adjust until the distance between the chip breaker's edge and the main blade's edge is about a line of a single hair (about 0.002 inch).

*When you tap the chip breaker too much, remove the main blade once and adjust it again.

Japanese Plane

How to sharpen a blade accurately and easily

Since it is quality Japanese steel, excellent sharpness revives over and over by sharpening the blade appropriately. KAKURI's plane honing guide is convenient for sharpening a Japanese plane blade.

I found the overall quality to be alright, my main issue was the amount of tuning required for proper function.

For not professionals it is perfect right after unboxing. I don’t know if it’s original or not, but works great.

... with the help of the mfrs video on how to adjust the blade, and a little patience, I'm amazed at how well this plane works for a fraction of the cost of my traditional western planes. Good to have choices in your tool arsenal.

Used it on different projects and it cuts very well. The tapping to position the blade needs some getting used to. But it’s a fun and great tool to have in your toolbox. The woods surface of the plane is also great, as it is less likely to scratch the woods you’re working on when you slip.

Bought it for my dad. He loves it.It is easy to set up and use once we watch the Youtube video. It is pricey but worth every penny we spend, 1000% better than those you buy from the Dollar Store or HomeDepot.

This was my first Japanese wooden hand plane. The plane worked out of the box but you could tell it needed work. With a few tutorials i got it sharpened and tuned, now it cuts really well. The reson for only 4 stars is it took a very very long time to get the back of the blade and the bevel flattened. I started with a 400 grit stone as that is the most aggressive one i have and it took me literally 2 hours by hand before it was perfectly flat and ready to move on to finer stones. It is a good deal for the price.
