About this item

  • Rectangular shape with rasp-cut teeth on one side for aggressive removal of material
  • Double-cut teeth on reverse side for rapid removal of material
  • Single-cut teeth on edges for smoothing
  • American pattern file for non-precision material removal
  • Cushion grip on tip and forged handle for comfort

The Nicholson farrier rasp file is 14" long and has a rectangular shape with American pattern rasp-cut teeth on one side for aggressive material removal and coarse (also called bastard) grade double-cut American pattern teeth on the other side for rapid removal of material with a rough finish. The rasp's density of six teeth per row provides a smoother finish than horse rasps with five teeth per row. The file has single-cut teeth on the edges for smoothing. A handle is forged on the end of the file, with cushion grip on the handle and tip for comfort.

Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth are single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother finish than equivalent American pattern files. For Swiss pattern files the length of the tool is the length of the blade, not counting the tang, which is the pointed end fitted for a handle; for American pattern files the length of the tool is its entire length, including the tang.

Nicholson manufactures hand tools and power tool accessories. The company is headquartered in Sparks, MD.

Very good rasp and worth the little bit extra than I was originally intending to spend. I work on the shape of my horse's feet in between farrier visits and this makes the job easy.

Nice, sharp rasp. My go-to for hoof trimming. Can't beat the price - this rasp is easily on par with rasps that are more than double the price.

I waited to write this review as I wanted to see how it compared to my other rasp that I bought and how it stood up to the test I was going to put it under. I love this rasp much better than my Heller Black Master Rasp for my miniature horse's ridiculously hard hooves. Not only are these hooves hard but this rasp is also taking a beating keeping down the fast growth as well that it's being used almost every day. So far it's staying sharp and standing up to the challenge! I definitely will be buying more of these.

It's a great rasp for the price. Has lasted longer than any other rasp I've had. Also really nice that it doesn't have a sharp point on the end for a handle (I don't line handles). This is my go to place for tasks now. Have bought two.

Good basic rasp to have. Got this to help upkeep my horses hooves between trims and love it. Does its job and is very affordable. I'm very small and have draft horses, so needed something that would do a lot of the work for me without me having to put too much effort in. Previously, I had always used old rasps that my farrier didn't need anymore. Switching to this I found out what I have been missing out on. This rasps down their hooves with very minimal effort. The coarse side I found is a little more difficult to use that the other, but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it eventually. Would definitely buy again, but I doubt I will have to for a long time. My only wish is that it came with a better handle.

I really like Nicholson files. On one side of the rasp it is a Very Aggressive File.On the second side is an even More Aggressive Rasp.Along both edges are "Mill Mark" file features.I don't work on horses, so I can't review any Farrier application of this rasp.I do work on wood and other softer materials (i.e.: plastics, fiberglass, etc.).If you've never used one of these Rasp's on wood before, then I'll tell you these are great for:Quickly fitting wood pieces together.Removing ragged edges after saw cuts.Breaking or rounding edges of "Rough Lumber."Or with the edge file teeth, quickly and easily cutting grooves or notches. My last Ferrier's Rasp was stolen, so this is a replacement. This Nicholson Ferrier's Rasp is well made, SHARP, and easy to use because of the orange grip surfaces.I recommend this fully.
