Very good quality built product. Needs more instructions on setting up adjustments to material cutting & take off. Arrived late with a apology to not delivering on time. My project got delayed.

After you polish the shoe and sharpen the blade, it might take you some time to align it. After that, enjoy!

Today I received this Spear & Jackson No 4 Hand Plane from Amazon. I have zero experience with Hand Planes and wanted something that would force me to learn the mechanics of setting up a plane so I can later appreciate a Veritas. After watching several You tube videos, I spent 2 1/2 hours setting this thing up. I flattened the sole with 80g & 120g sand paper. I used a black marker to draw lines on the sole a few different times and the flattening probably took 1 1/2 hours. Sharpened the blade with my Veritas sharpening jig and somewhat got the Plane set up enough to work. I did not wax the sole, that will happen tomorrow. This was a lot of fun. Unfortunately with my inexperience I cannot comment on the quality or function. The build quality is "rough", but it is more than fine with me for the time being.I set the chip breaker roughly 1/16th from the blade tip.The Iron needs to be adjusted based on my shavings. The Depth adjustment Wheel has a spot where it will turn almost a full turn before it will adjust the blade. there is no play in the wheel, but just a spot with little tension - I'm not sure if this is because of my poor set up or because the Plane was $43.I think I had the blade depth a touch to deep and the blade needs to be sharpened properly as I quickly sharped it with 400g sand paper and a 1000g wet stone. The shavings have ripples and I am assuming this has to do with the sole not being waxed and the blade not being sharp enough......I am very happy considering it works this well for $43!Overall the Plane is solid. The parts seem to fit properly (machined well enough to work well)There were no defects from what I can see

Being an hobbyist woodworker, I say this was not dissimilar to other cheap planes out there. I had to work 2.5 hours to flattening the sole ans sides are still not 90 degrees.I like the cap iron and blade, blade wasn't sharp which is expected but it was very easy to sharp. Must say the blade iron is thicker than what you see pn other cheap brands. Good handle, made of real wood.If you are willing to put the effort to work on it, very reasonable cheap option. Otherwise, go with Veritas or woodriver options or even used early 1900 Stanley's if you can get one.

If you want a 50 dollar hand plane you got one. It has a hard time doing more work than a government employee unless you spend a-lot of time and effort reshaping the iron, chip breaker, etc. Works as well as a 300$ plane if you put in the effort though.

This very robust plane is made in Sheffield, England so you know it’s a gem. Sharpen the iron and apply a honed edge and adjust to literally take off a paper thin shaving of wood. True a board, a door that is sticking, or just teach your grandkids how to work with their hands aside from a game controller for Christ sake!

This Spear and Jackson no.4 plane is right up there with any Stanley I own, and I own 36 Stanley's of all sizes. Each and every one of them I love, but I have to admit that this new Spear and Jackson required less work to get it up and running than than any of my new or old Stanley's. I am fussy about my planes. However, with this new boy I can find no complaint whatsoever. The sole was flat and only need a few passes on a progression of sandpaper grits to get it super smooth and flat. The wood is hardwood, near as I can tell, and well finished with a natural, non glossy, look. The frog was machined nicely with no sloppy enamel on it. The blade was so easy to sharpen. Took me 15 minutes to bring it up to perfection, just using sandpaper. It shaves the thinnest, gossamer like shavings with no effort at all. It was fun getting it shipshape. I will give it away as Christmas gift to a young apprentice I know.I do have over 50 years experience, so that may have helped, but I do believe anybody can do what I did, which makes this Spear and Jackson plane ideal for newcomers to the trade or oldies like me who just enjoy trying out new tools.By the way, I also recommend their handsaws. Bought a few of them and, for the money,a they are bargains, just like this no.4 plane.
