I had to plane off the lip of a countertop that hung too far down for a dishwasher. This got the job done without much hassle. I'd rather use my plug-in power planar any day of the week, but there wasn't enough room without removing the whole dishwasher. However, if you're trying to do some serious woodworking, I would spend the money on a better tool. Not to say that this tool feels cheaply made -- it's pretty solid metal. Just that I don't expect it to be as versatile as some of the better ones out there. But, at this price, I can't complain. Probably perfect for an occasional use, such as maybe a door that sticks.

Just opened this. Blade is a bit dull and needs some love. Heel seems a bit concave, and rocks a bit on a flat surface. I will have to grind it flat with sandpaper on a flat surface plate. After touching it up and trying it on a piece, I may revisit this review.

I CHANGED MY MIND!I originally gave this 2 stars because it lacks a depth adjustment. But since then I have studied a lot about using hand tools, and I learned about using a mallet or small hammer to adjust the depth on wood-body hand planes. That technique works perfectly here (at least for extending and straightening the blade with taps to the back of the iron)! I can dial this in to take a VERY fine cut and it works beautifully. The blade holds an edge reasonably well and I use it all the time. My favorite use so far is to clean the machining (jointer, planer, or table saw) marks off of the edge of a board. I've used it particularly for my homemade edge banding for plywood. I just set the depth of cut to barely take a paper-thin shaving and I can use this like an eraser to wipe away the little burn marks and ripples from the saw blade. I love it!That said, perhaps the 12-220 model is still a better choice. But I haven't used that, so I can't say for sure. But for the price I will happily give this 5 stars.Original review follows, just for reference:------------------------------------------------I was just getting into hand planes and decided to order a basic block plane to get me started. I saw this and the 12-220 and to my uneducated eyes they seemed to be basically the same thing. So I ordered this one as it was about $5 cheaper. BIG mistake. The 12-220 has a depth adjustment knob. This one doesn't. You have to loosen the blade/iron tension knob and manually set both the depth and angle, then tighten it again without messing up that adjustment. Spend the extra few bucks (actually as I'm writing this they are now the same price, within pennies) and get the better one.The sole needed to be flattened and the iron needed to be sharpened, but that should always be expected at this price.

Great planer, great price. Used this little gem to get a set of french doors to open and close it was great! Smooth edge from the extremely sharp blade that comes with this device. Setting the depth is fairly easy - just make sure you don't try to take too much off at once, this is a SMALL planer - but that's the beauty of it!
