It is recommended to be replaced every 30k miles or more.I do not think suction test is sufficient, except for major clog problem, because you have to consider the degradation of the spring strength over time too from all that constant extreme heat. Even if the jiggle and suction test passes, it is still a good idea to replace this inexpensive item on older vehicles.I cleaned the old functioning one with break cleaner and then compared subjectively spring strength between the old and the new one by free shaking them longitudinally and the new one's spring acted 'springier'.Looks and quality as described in the picture. Black oxide finish is supreme.Perfect replacement fit for 01-04 xTerra. Use deep 19mm socket. Have needle nose pliers ready for PCV BLOWBY HOSE clamp removal (for easier access to the pcv valve), gloves for scrape and cut protection as you remove the stuck hose, flat screwdriver to start the hose going (+optional hose removal tool), 10mm socket to remove 2 bolts on the EGR CONTROL VALVE that is also slightly in the way. That's about it. Easy job that is well worth doing. If the inside of the hose tubing is really gunked up, you can spray something inside to clean it and use optional 10mm wide brush to work it clean. I think the engine is now working smoother on idle because this part affects the return gases circulation performance of the engine and thus the oxygen % to recirculated gases mixture added as computer adjusts that based on data it reads from sensors in order to make sure that the mixture is neither too lean nor not too rich.PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation.EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation.
